Elections of the Governor (Bashkan) of Gagauzia (Gagauz Yeri) on March 22, 2015

Ordinary elections of the Governor (Bashkan) of Gagauzia have been scheduled by Decision no. 352-C3/V of the People’s Assembly of the Territorial Administrative Unit of Gagauzia for 22 March 2015. According to the law of TAU Gagauzia on the elections of the Governor (Bashkan), if no candidate obtains a simple majority of votes, the second round of elections shall be scheduled within two weeks, with the participation of the two candidates that obtained the most votes in the first round. So, if necessary, the second round of elections will take place on 5 April 2015. On 19 January 2015, the People’s Assembly adopted Law no. 53-C3/V on modifying article 50 (1) of the Law on the elections of the Governor (Bashkan), according to which the number of signatures necessary for the registration of a candidate for the position of Bashkan by the Central Electoral Commission of Gagauzia was reduced from 5 thousand to 1.5 thousand. Consequently, the number of signatures that need to be collected in each of the autonomy’s localities has been reduced from 300 to 100.
