The head of state has mentioned also that in the last four years, thanks to a serious and very constructive co-operation between Chisinau and Comrat, Gagauzia has reached a serious socio-political stability, has overcome many long-lasting problems, dating as well as from the period of the former USSR. President Voronin said that the fact that Moldovan parliament has offered to Gagauzia a special statute is a unique case in Modern Europe and that he is proud of these tight and wealthy relationships established. CoE observers

A delegation of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe (CLRAE) will monitor elections for the Governor post of Gagauzia, on December 3, 2006. Representatives of Great Britain, the Netherlands, Romania, San Marino, Armenia and employees of the Congress Secretariat are members of this delegation. During November 30 — December 4 period, CLRAE representatives are to meet with public servants, electoral bodies’ members (on central and local levels), electoral contestants, civil society representatives and other observers of elections.

Accusations on the abuses of police

Moldovan police has confiscated copies of the “Gagauz Halki” newspaper, dedicated exclusively to Mihail Formuzal, candidate for the Governor post of Gagauzia. According to a statement of the “Edinaia Gagauzia” Movement, several thousands of copies printed in Transnistria were transported by a representative of the “Edinaia Gagauzia” Movement, who has been stopped by police and custom officers, and arrested later for a 7 days period, in accordance with a court decision adopted in the absence of lawyer. The executive body of the “Edinaia Gagauzia” Movement qualifies this as a tentative to influence the electoral process in Gagauzia. (After a communique of the “Edinaia Gagauzia” Movement)
