Preliminary results of the repeated elections of the Chisinau mayor

All 283 polling stations opened in the due time — at 07:00.

The electoral lists comprised 572,555 voters at the very beginning, but another 3,558 voters were included in additional lists meanwhile.

Observers accredited at polling stations did not register violations capable to affect the legality of elections.

It was established when the polling stations closed up that the turnout was similar to the one registered on November 27, 2005, as 22.07 percent of electors attended the repeat scrutiny (22.37 percent took part on November 27). Thus, the repeat elections will be invalidated, too, because less than one third of the number of people included in the electoral lists attended them.

According to preliminary data collected after the processing of ballots from all poling stations, the electoral competitors garnered the following votes:

  1. URSU Vasile, independent candidate — 52.91 percent (67,279 votes)

  2. CHIRTOACA Dorin, Liberal Party — 35.62 percent (45,299 votes)

  3. KRILOV Vlanetin, Electoral Bloc “Patria-Родина — Равноправие” — 6.92 percent (8,803 votes)

  4. CERNEI Oleg, Environmental Party “Alianta Verde” of Moldova — 3.51 percent (4,462 votes)

  5. SIMA Gheorghe, Labour Union “Patria-Родина” Party — 1.04 percent (1,324 votes)

All candidates regretted the absenteeism of electors, motivating this situation differently.

As regards the failure of the forth try to elect a mayor-general, representatives of authorities and political commentators called for reduction or annulment of the electoral threshold.

As a result, the only conclusion is that the election legislation must be amended as soon as possible, by taking into consideration all proposals and recommendations of international institutions, observers, and other competent experts.
