Interim President requests to ascertain the circumstances that justify the dissolution of Parliament

Interim President of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Ghimpu, requested the Constitutional Court to find whether there are circumstances that would justify the dissolution of the country’s parliament. The request shows that the current parliament, elected on 29 July 2009, failed to elect the President, because of non-participation of communist MPs in the elections and in these conditions the constitutional provisions set down the dissolution of parliament and early parliamentary election announcement. Chairman of Constitutional Court said there is deadline established for adopting the Court’s decision in this regard, but most likely, the opinion could be issued next week. Dumitru Pulbere added there is no deadline within which the interim President would be obliged to dissolve the Parliament and to announce the date for early elections, however the decree on dissolution and setting the election date could appear quite soon.

MRRM communique about Roma participation in referendum

Social-political Movement of Roma in Moldova (MRRM) has issued a press release whereby announcing that the referendum of September 5 was the first electoral poll for this entity. MRRM mentions the reasons of low turnout of the population in the plebiscite: MRRM believes that it managed to mobilize a third of Roma citizens with the voting ability.

AMN Statement

Serafim Urechean, Chairman of the "Moldova Noastra" (Our Moldova) Alliance, believes that AEI components have made some errors during the referendum campaign and these should not be repeated, among them: AEI parties were campaigning not for the referendum but for the future presidential elections; the lack of common staff; lack of decision about a single candidate for the position of President; non-acceptance of a single list for early parliamentary elections. AMN opts for finding a solution in parliament and considers that “the risk of communists coming back is not over yet”.
