The post-referendum statements by PNL and PDM

National Liberal Party (PNL) informs that it has participated in the referendum of September 5 proceeding from its program, which provides the option for a head of state elected by all citizens. PNL has been with AEI, with its possibilities of mobilizing people to referendum, but the heavy burden of campaigning pro-referendum came upon the parliamentary parties, which were too certain about the positive outcome and left the task of convincing the population on electronic media and territorial structures. The lack of previous practice also has led to the lack of population’s understanding over the scope of referendum and what is at stake. PNL considers that the state, the Central Electoral Commission, the municipal, district and local public authorities have not strongly campaigned for the need to attend the referendum, leaving this impartial task on the parties, which implicitly cannot be objective, and the anti-democratic position of the Communists’ Party, intimidating the people to go and vote, passivity, non-involvement of competent bodies in these illegal actions have favored the non-participation of people in the referendum. PNL will review its programmatic position and will propose the cancellation of the position of the head of state, which continuously generated constitutional, social and political instability in Moldova. The parliamentary parties should show political will to initiate the process of rethinking substantially the constitutional system, to adopt a new Constitution. PNL also believes that lawmakers must now change the way of electing the President by a low threshold within the Legislative, after which to decide by consensus the date of early parliamentary elections to be held in this autumn or next spring. (PNL statement)

Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova, Marian Lupu, signed a statement thanking all those who have voted and states that for the first time a part of Moldovan political class turned its face towards the citizens aiming at ending the nonsense political crisis. Marian Lupu considers that those who voted had responded unequivocally FOR a greater responsibility of politics before the people, FOR the right to elect the President by direct vote. The invalidation of the constitutional referendum of September 5 is not somebody’s victory or failure, but a lesson that democracy is cultivated through hard work and most intense dialogue, it’s about the fact that even for much-needed changes the society must fight. PDM’ political creed remains unchanged: the issues that divide the society must be left aside, we must built factories, roads, universities and hospitals, create new jobs, increase pensions and wages. As a result of the referendum, the responsible political class in Moldova will be more wise, moderated and also more decided to acts, as shows the statement of PDM Chairman. (PDM statement)

External comments about the failure of the referendum

STRATFOR Agency commented that the failure of the constitutional referendum in the Republic of Moldova highlights the growing influence of Russia in this country, which is possible once the Ukraine was brought back under the Russian influence. According to STRATFOR, the pro-European coalition of Moldova has suffered defeat and the importance of the referendum goes beyond domestic political reasons, being representative for Moldova as an area disputed between Russia and the West.
